This is on the road to Matam which is a twelve hour ride by automobile from Dakar. Here, in the north it is dry, hot, arid and prone to sandstorms. Notice the sand blown across the highway and the twister on the left side of the road.

Roadside fruit vendors are always a good sight to see when you're on a long roadtrip. This day, they have mounds of fresh watermelons for sale.

 

Linda was surprised to find these men digging a private latrine for her in a village in Matam. It was 115 degrees that day! Unfortunately, she did not move to this village.
